Day trip to cinque terre with bags?
I plan on travelling from Florence to Cinque Terre and then to Rome. I will be travelling with a single roller board (small-ish rolling luggage) as will my wife. Can anyone advise me on whether it is possible to leave my luggage at the train station in Cinque Terre (I am guessing Monterosso is the most logical place) so we can hike Cinque Terre, then return to Monterosso and take the train on to Rome? This would mean we have to "back-track" back to the original town in CT as well. Any advice or thoughts?

I have been to CT and Monterosso, and didn't notice any luggage lockers. Maybe someone else can advise.
However, here's another possibility. If you're going from Florence, I assume you're changing trains in Pisa. I'm pretty sure there are lockers there. Why not leave your stuff there and pick it up on the way back to Rome, assuming you go back that way?
Also, as far as hiking goes, you could take the train to Monterosso, hike south to Vernazza, and then take the train out of Vernazza.

I think Pisa is a better idea as well as people usually arrive and leave from different towns in CT. Plus I'm sure Pisa will have better hours for dropping off and picking up than CT. The lockers in Pisa are right past the police station right on the first platform from the station.

that said when i was in Pisa two years ago yes there was a left-luggage but no lockers then and the left-luggage showed no signs of ever opening. Check the www.trenitalia.com site for current baggage facility info in Pisa. And lockers can always be closed due to security concerns.

I used the left luggage in Pisa in March with no issues. When we first got there the door was closed but the guy was just right across the way in the cafe. He saw us and came right over. When we went to pick up the bags he was already there helping a couple in front of us.

I also know there is a left luggage place at the LaSpezia train station. One pays 3E for first 12 hours per piece then 2E per piece for each succeeding 12 hours. We happened to travel to Florence to LaSpezia then La Spezia to Manarola. Do you plan to hike all 5 towns in one day and leave? I would consider that pretty ambitious. It is doable but expect sore calves the next day. The hike will take 7 + hours. We hile 8 hours one day but we took the next day off to rest our legs. What are your plans for the following day? Once you buy your CT pass, you can use the paths and trains. So no matter which end you start, you can take the train back to the start. One thing, someone suggested to us that we go Riomaggiore to Monteresso. The path from Vernazza to Monteresso was easier in our opinion than vice versa. If you start at Monteresso the first 30 minutes (I am guessing) is straight up steep stairs. We felt it was a lot easier going down those stairs at the end of our climb. Now that I said that someone else will say the opposite. Anyway, if you happened to go to La Spezia. You can buy your CT card there. It would cover your train to Riomaggiore, the hike all the way to Monteresso, and the train back to LaSpezia. Just a thought.

As you'll have to change trains (to small local line) at La Spezia, I'd suggest leaving luggage there, then buying CT card which will cover local train journeys & entry to footpaths (3euros each). Take the train to Monterosso al Mare and hike back to Vernazza. it's true the first 30 mins are steeply up hill but you can reward yourself after the 2 hour hike with a gelato and a rest by the harbour in Vernazza- then only 20-25 min journey back to La Spezia
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
