Day trip outside of Dublin
We (2 adults) will be in Dublin for 2 1/2 days at the end of this month and want to experience a "real" Irish village outside of the city on our 1 full day there. Recommendations very much appreciated!

To see Real Irish Villages, you would probably have to go to Kerry or Galway :)
Avoca is where Ballykissangle is filmed: http://visitwicklow.ie/towns-villages/avoca/# Glendalough is worth a trip: http://visitwicklow.ie/towns-village...h-glendalough/ Enniskerry has nice walks and you can visit Powerscourt house gardens http://visitwicklow.ie/towns-villages/enniskerry/ http://powerscourt.com/ Don't go to Bray or Greystones - they are now part of the Dublin Urban sprawl. |
Kilkenny is not a village, its a town, but it is an interesting place to visit, although I have not been there for several years.

Every village on the Island of Ireland is a real Irish village. There are rural villages outside the Dublin commuter belt you don't have to go all the way west.
With only 2 1/2 days in Dublin though making a direct suggestion using public transport? Perhaps consider Abbeyleix as part of a loop Dublin to Kilkenny, bus one way train the other? |
Malahide is outside Dublin. Has a fabulous manor house/castle, easy to get to by bus , nice walk to town and the sea.

Howth is beautiful. Great cliff walk, best seafood and love walking through the village and old church ruins. Nice Saturday market. You take the dart train from Connelly Station. I loved Avoca. There is a day tour you can take there but we skipped the mill tour and went to drink at Fitzgerald's pub and then popped into Kathleen's store. The outside of the church was used for filming but interior shots were done in a different church close by, I loved this show so enjoyed that immensely. We also went to Asher gardens. The man's name was Norman. We found him on TA but not sure if he still does tours. Small bus and very interesting day,
