Day Trip Out of Stockholm
I will be visiting Stockholm from June 25 through June 30 and would like recommendations for a day trip out of the city. I'm thinking about 1) Dalarna and the area around Lake Siljan, or 2) Kalmar, Vaxjo and Orrefors. I'm concerned about the distances, however, especially if I want to head south to Skana. I would welcome information on the merits and feasibility of either trip I'm considering, as well as recommendations for alternate excursions. I can speak some svenska, but am by no means fluent. I have spent time in Uppsala and sailed through the Archipelago on a previous trip to Sweden, and would like to try something different this time. Thanks!

The best way to travel, I think ist to go by train. You can reach Swedish Railway at http://www.sj.se/ For a trip to lake siljan, check timetables for Mora To the other places i am shure there is a good train connection. Look also for "svenska turistföreningen" (swedish tourist federation) at: http://www.stfturist.se |
Bengt is correct, Train is the best mode of transportation. One thing though.
I would not do Dalarna or Skane in one day. Why not spend a night there instead. You could ofcourse take nighttrains, but pay attention Stockholmis the Culture Capital of Europe this year. This means more travellers in and out of Stockholm than normally. Pick up a rail pass, maybe Sweden pass It will save you money in the long run. |
I am Swedish and visit my parents every two years in Sweden.
I recommend a bus tour- the buses are fast and new and very reasonable. Just go into a local travel agency and they have many, many trips to choose from.
Most Americans are not aware of the wonderful trips being offered.
Dalarna and the area around Lake Siljan, or Kalmar, Vaxjo and Orrefors. That's very far in my opinon. Mora for examle is 4 hours by train that's 8 return. The arcipelago outside Stockholm is perfect for a day or two, sleep on a hostel on an island.

Thomas
