Day trip from Trieste - Piran, Porec or Rovinj

I have got a really cheap flight with Ryanair to Trieste for 4 nights. I would like to do one day trip. My preference is Rovinj but it looks like there are only 2 buses per day and the first one leaves at 14.00pm and the returns are not good either. Has anyone done this leaving Trieste about 08.00 and returning in the evening?

If the above is not possible what about Porec or Piran are they easy bus/train day trips from Trieste?

If none of the above is possible does anyone have any recommendations for a day trip. I enjoy history and beautiful buildings.

Thanks.

I can't answer your questions about transportation, but if you have an interest in history and beautiful buildings, Porec would be well worth considering. The basilica is quite impressive, and the mix of ruins and buildings from various eras in the small old town is interesting. Enjoy!

Pula has interesting sites too.

Thank you, Pula is a little bit too far away for a day trip but thank you so much. By looking this up I found a bus that leaves Trieste at 08.00am for Pula and stops at both Porec and Rovinj with a return at 16.00pm.

Now my question is Porec or Rovinj?

Both look great and what I was looking for.

As they are on the same route can I do both in 1 day?

Thanks

For Porec, plan on between 1/2 hour and 1 hr to see the Basilica; maybe another hour to roam around the old town.

For Rovinj, at least a couple of hours to roam around.

Don't forget that you'll need time to get to and from the bus station.

The bus stations in both Porec and Rovinj are central. If I had to choose I'd do Rovinj

Either one you choose you'll be treated to beautiful coasts and historic sites. Rovinj is a bit more of a fishing town while Porec is a tad more touristy...Still Porec allows for some nice hiking along the coast. noambit.com is offering a free audio tour of the Euphrasian Basilica in Porec. A must see site if you end up there. http://www.noambit.com/audio-tours/t...sian-basilica/

My vote would definitely be Rovinj. Piran is small and pretty and Porec was just OK but we loved Rovinj. If you haven't seen any photos, check out the homepages on these:

If it was me, I'd spend a day in Trieste and the rest of the time in Rovinj, squeezing in a trip to Piran if you could.

By the way, we had a car so can't comment on buses. If you want to drive, Hertz allows you to take the car into Slovenia and Croatia. There is public parking info on both of the websites above.

Thank you for all your replies but as I only have 3 full days I will probably stick to Trieste with a trip to Piran (if I have time) as it is closer.

Rovinj looks lovely - next time

Thanks

Trieste's Il Piccolo newspaper has reported that, beginning in May, there will again this year be hydrofoil service between Trieste and Piran, Porec and Rovinj. However, the link to the Trieste line from the website of the parent company, Ustica Lines, isn't currently functioning - but worth keeping an eye on.
