Day trip from Strasbourg.

I reworked my itinerary and dropped some cities in favour of spending longer in the cities that I will visit. I have an extra day and I'm looking at possible day trips from Strasbourg. Riems, Nancy and Dijon are all possibilities. Colmar is of no interest.

Which of these cities would be best? Any other suggestions for day trips from Strasbourg?

Thanks.

Well, I loved Colmar, but other nearby towns we have enjoyed are Mulhouse for the car museum, Wissembourg for gorgeous architecture/ canals, and the route de vin villages.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mulhouse is already part of my itinerary mainly to see the car museum.

Easy to get to the museum, take tram directly there from train station. The museum is fantastic, an incredible collection. I have no idea why so few people visit it. We did stop in Colmar on the train ride back to Strasbourg, so if you change your mind, it's a nice stop for lunch and a stroll, quietens down significantly once you get one street away from the little Venice section.

I don't think there is any "best", they are all good to see, and of major interest (those 3 cities), so it depends on your interests and the logistics (time, ease, etc.). I visited Nancy from Strasbourg and loved it but I visited Reims and Dijon on other trips for other reasons. I also have a strong interest in architectural history and regional museums for local arts/history, which is what I was interested in seeing in Nancy (Art Nouveau buildings and museum and the regional museum). But Reims has the wonderful cathedral and WWII museum (surrender museum). I have no interest in champagne at all, I don't even like it, so didn't go to any of that in Reims but it has plenty else to see.

Agree that Colmar is a gem. And driving the wine route between Colmar and Strasbourg gives you access to several very charming villages.

Of the others we have done only Mulhouse. We did see the car museum and were not impressed - how many blue Bugattis can you look at? but admit that I am not a fan of old cars.

If you're doing the daytrip by train, I'd choose Nancy or Dijon. The train schedules and fares are good and those cities work well for a daytrip. They are quite different from Strasbourg and from each other.

Like Christina, I loved Nancy. The station is close to Place Stanislas where the tourist office is located. Also on the Place is the Fine Arts Museum, and the Museum of Lorraine is a short walk away. Of course, the Place itself is magnificent and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Ecole de Nancy Museum (Art Nouveau) is a taxi or bus ride away. The Tourist Office has a good website:

I also really enjoyed a daytrip to Dijon. The Tourist Office by the station has a pamphlet with a wonderful walking tour, the Owl Trail. It's a beautiful city.

If you have any interest at all in Art Nouveau, Nancy is an absolute must. It was the center of French Art Nouveau. It also has a magnificent square, in quite another style! I loved Strasbourg and Nancy so much on an earlier trip (click on my name for my French TR) I am going back to both this trip, and neither will be day trips.

Nancy is an extremely nice and easy trip by commuter train from Strasbourg.
