Day trip from Rome, Pompeii or Herculeum

We want to make this a day trip...so can we see both? Is it possible?

and if not, and you had to choose one, which would you choose and why?

I've read about the transport to Pompeii from Rome, how is the transportation to Herculeum different?

We actually did both in one day, but it was a whirlwind. Both places are fascinating. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose Pompeii. We had a car, so I cannot help you with transportation issues. There are others who will chime in, I am sure. Enjoy your trip. PJK

Hi Ike - Pompeii and Ercolano are only 10 mins apart on the Circumvesuviana line. You can do both IF you make an early start from Rome. Plan to be there soon after opening time.

Take the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana train to POMPEII SCAVI.

For timetables see:
www.trenitalia.it (Rome-Naples trains)
www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm (Circumvesuviana)

You can backtrack to Ercolano early afternoon - and return to Rome via Naples from there.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Yes it is possible if you leave early with ~4hrs in Pompeii and ~2hrs in Herculaneum.

2hrs in Herculaneum is plenty of time, 4hrs in Pompeii is decent but you could spent all day there.

My choice would be Pompeii out of the 2.

It's the same exact daytrip from Rome using the same trains.
Herculaneum is halfway between Naples and Pompeii on the same trainline (Circumvesuviana) and a 5min walk from the station.

Here's my directions; http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34665492

p.s. I'm certain that the Villa of Poppea is closed for restorations.
Also the the Villa of the Papyri is closed for excavations.
These are 2 nearby seperate sites in my directions.

I didn't see Steve's post before I posted.

Definitely do Herculaneum 2nd.
It's a much smaller site and they don't start herding the people out until almost closing time.

Plus even if you only had a half-hour you would get a bird's eye view of the whole site as you desend the long ramp and also be able to do a quick walk-thru on the streets.
Regards, Walter
