Day trip from Rome
Using public transportion, which would you recommend for a daytrip; Tivoli/Hadrian Villa or Ostea Antica?
|
My wife and I faced this question last May and decided on Ostia Antica because it's much easier to get to. We'd like to go to Tivoli, and we'll probably do so on our next trip to Rome.

I have done both and both are good day trips. As with many choices, it depends on your interests. I personally would pick Ostia Antica because of a strong interest in ancient roman ruins and the social history of this old port city. If you are really interested in gardens/landscaping then Tivoli.
It also depends a little on what time of year you would be visiting. |
sjj, you mention that Ostia is easier to get to. I'm also considering Tivoli or Ostia. How complicated is it to get to Tivoli?

There's a thread in this forum that talks about getting to Tivoli. As I recall, it's a little complicated - you have to travel to a bus station in Rome, then take a bus to Tivoli, and then take a bus to Hadrian's villa - and it sounded like two hours each way. If you can't find anything in this forum, I think Rick Steeves talks about it.

Thanks, I'll search this out. I don't think I want to spend 2 hours to get someplace for this trip since I'll just a few days for Rome. I may stay put anyway, but will decide once I'm there.
