Day trip from Rome?

Hello!

Would it be possible to take a day trip to the small town of Civita de Bagnoregio from Rome? Is there public transportation to get us there and back or would that be too much for a day trip/does it warrant a night in a hotel? I am trying to keep Rome as a base to avoid so many different hotel stays while on my honeymoon. Thanks for all of your feedback in advance.

Hi Betsy,

Civita is beautiful and magical, but good for about a 1/2 day. there is just one small hotel there. Didn't go inside so I can't say what it was like. You are aware that the only way there is by foot?

Where else are you going on your honeymoon? If including Tuscany, spend one night in Orvieto, pick up a car, and see Civita that way.

Rick Steve gives bus directions in his book, but I didn't think it sounded very time efficient.

Buon viaggio!

We fly into Rome and out of Milan and have 14 days. We are renting a car. I have us staying three nights in Rome, one in Assisi, two in Chianti, two in Florence, two in Cinque Terra, and three in the Lakes Region. It seems like a lot but I think we can do it. Our plans our not set in stone so I can always change. We travel 8/29-9/12. My sister stopped in Orvieto last April and suggested that since I have so much I want to do, to go to Assisi over Orvieto. I've been reading so many wonderful things about Civita and thought it would be great to see, if time permits. We are moving around so much, I'm not sure if I want to add another hotel stay there. I will read more about the bus system in Rick Steve's and determine if it will be worth the time as a day trip from Rome. I know it is accessible by foot across a bridge. Perhaps I could spend two nights in Rome, drive to Civita, spend a 1/2 day and arrive in Assisi in the evening and spend two nights in Assisi. I just love Rome and don't want to cut it short. Any ideas?

You could very easily take the one hour train ride from Rome to Orvieto, go up the 5 minute funicular to see the absolutely beautiful cathedral there, go down the funicular again. There is a rental car place close to the funicular/train station so you can rent a car , drive the 30 minutes to Civita. Civita is very worth going to visit but it will not take half a day. You can see the whole town in two hours- all 15 houses and 15 inhabitants, the view and the Cathedral, too. That is really all there is to see. Rick Steves has a good description of it in his book and probably on his website, too.

We did that, then we ate a long lunch outside Bagnoreggio (sp)and drove on to Assisi where we spent a couple of nights. The only problem that we had was the large long lunch made us feel a little sleepy and sea sick for the curvey drive to Assisi. However, it was not really a problem.

I will say that Orvieto is a great place to spend the night- very easy to get around in and less touristy than Assisi.

Hi Betsy,

Orvieto has a really great restaurant:

I Sette Consoli Pzza Sant’Angelo 1A phone/fax 011 39 0763 343911

Try to have lunch in their garden - 40E pp fixed price menu and worth every penny.
