Day Trip From Porto to Braga and Guimarães
 

My group of four would like to visit Braga and Guimaraes for a day during a weeklong stay in Porto. I'm inclined to book a tour with a company like Cool Tour Porto, but would it be be doable to use public transit? Would it be preferable to just rent a car so we would have more flexibility?

I think it depends on what, exactly, the four of you want to do in those locations. There's certainly far more that you might want to do than can possibly be seen or experienced in a single day trip that includes both. (I found a full day in each barely sufficient.)

What time of year is your trip? Several years ago my husband and I planned a day trip to both from Porto and we had a car as doing a Portugal road trip and this was in mid June. It was raining when we left Porto to head North and you are driving up in the mountains and at the higher elevation the rain was a bit more like sleet and fog so we missed the turn-off for Braga entirely and went directly to Guimares which turned out to be a good situation as we really enjoyed Guimares as there was a lot to see and do and could have easily spent another day there.

Guimaraes is an easy train trip from Porto…maybe an hour or so. It’s a wonderful town..lots of history and medieval center…Braga is a short hop as well. Rome to Rio is not actually a good site for punctuations of times. Google maps is much better.

IME, which of these options is better depends on how specific one is. For either, you must enter dates and times accurately. I find rome2rio more useful for identifying my range of options. If I have a very specific and inflexible date and time in mind, google maps can work well.

Try both!

We went to Porto last summer and stayed for 6 days. We went to Guimaraes on our own using public transit. Trying to visit both on the same day with public transit is challenging. So if you really want to go to both, taking an organized tour is your best bet. If you are okay with only visiting one, in our case, Guimaraes, then DIY is very easy (and cheap). Hi abbydog, in June is also this HUGE festival in Porto - festival of Sao Joao! It's supposed to be all-night partying. We left the day before the festival

Hi abbydog, I really enjoyed exactly the daytrip you mentioned from Porto with CoolTours (though in early spring). I generally don't take tours and I use public transportation when traveling (with only a few exceptions involving use of private drivers since I don't drive). My TR (link below) discusses the experience with CoolTours, which worked perfectly for me, especially given the amount of time I had and my desire to see some highlights in Braga and Guimares w/o the hassle of planning at that point in my trip. I'd love to spend more time in the latter in some future trip.

Yes, studenttobe! It was your trip report that got me interested in Braga and Guimares. I would love to do the CoolTours trip, but I fear my companions will want to just drive to Guimares and wander around ...

Cost about 3 euros from Porto to Braga, take 1.10 minutes. Stations in the centre so easy to walk.

Most of Braga centre can be seen in 4 hours in my opinion, you will need anoher 2 hours to visit the santuary if you are going by public transports, easier to get an uber there and public transport back down the hill. You can use the furnicular so its an experience.

Guimaraes is 30 mins from Braga, so you can either catch the train or get an uber, they are cheap.
Guimaraes is the better city in my opinion more to see, more history and prettier.

You can do Braga and Guimarães in one day, but honestly you’ll only scratch the surface of both. It really depends on how much you want to see — if you’re interested in major sights like Bom Jesus in Braga and the castle and historic centre in Guimarães, one day feels rushed.

Public transport works, but coordinating trains between the two cities takes time. In my opinion, the best option is to rent a car for flexibility and, ideally, spend one full day in Braga and another in Guimarães. If possible, consider booking a local walking tour in each city to properly understand the main highlights.

If you only have one day, it’s doable — just keep expectations realistic.
