Day trip from Mostar: do with tour company or without?
We will be in Mostar for 2 nights. The first day we plan to spend it all in the old town. It seems like 1 day is enough so we were looking into exploring: Blagaj Tekke (although I keep seeing the exact same picture and I've started wondering if it's over-hyped?) and Pocitelj (medieval town seems quite interesting). I'm wondering if we should take a tour group (cons for us: hate listening to what sometimes can seem like trivial information, sometimes it can be a very long day, only pro: transportation) OR is there a way for us to do on our own? If on our own, I'd rather not rent a car because we drive only automatic and the prices are nuts. So, my questions:
1- Is it worth a day trip (sounds like it would be 3-4 hours) to Blagaj Tekke and Pocitelj? 2- Can we do this using a bus? Uber? (is Uber in Bosnia)? Anyone know a driver who could drive us? 3- Should we use the 2nd day for more exploring around Mostar? What else is there to see (will see bridge, mosque, bazaar, walk around old town first day). We love nature and history (not interested in museums in Bosnia). Thank you! |
Headed to Mostar in September and curious what responses you get to this thread! Following!

Just bear in mind that between 1000-1600 Mostar Old Town and the Bridge will be absolutely mobbed with tours and and day trippers. Best imo to at least spend an overnight there.

Everything in Bosnia is cheap for tourists. Just ask at your hotel or lodging for a driver to drive you to the Blagaj Tekke. This is the kind of country where everyone knows "a guy" who can drive you for a price. He/she may even wait for you while you go in. It doesn't take long to see the Blagaj Tekke, really. I would see no need for a tour.
You might also consider a side trip to the amazing waterfall at Kravice - maybe get the same driver to take you to both places. I'll bet you the price will be very reasonable. |
Blagaj and Pocitelj on our list, too. As well as Kravice waterfalls.
Re: Blagaj, I've read that the bus schedule is very loose and you might end up waiting quite a while (hour plus). As Andrew said, if a driver is cheap it might be a better use of your time. We will have a rental car so just plan to drive. I've also seen/read that's its a bit of a food desert when you arrive in Blagaj. They do have a restaurant(s) near the monastery but they are touristy/overpriced. So eat before you go or bring your own snacks! |
Thank you both! We will just ask our hotel for a driver and get snacks from a grocery store. |
