Day trip from Manchester

I will be visiting Manchester in the spring. I won't have too much time for travelling outside of Manchester, but enough to do one good day trip. Any suggestions? Reading the forum I think that Edinburgh (my first choice) is a bit far for a day trip? I am interesting in "seeing the sights" meaning the scenery and maybe a walking tour.

The natural choice is the Peaks District, possibly including Chatsworth House and some country walking. Only an hour'd drive or so. Further afield is the Lakes District--very beautiful. Two hours or so by car. Also reachable by train.

Yes, the Lake Districk and the Peak District are within fairly easy reach.
You could also visit Chester and a bit of North Wales.

You might want to think about York. It is a most interesting place with lots of places to visit. By train it is only 1 1/2 hours.
