Odin, for me business trips are not done on teh cheap. I am assuming that because they are looking at cheap flights that they are looking at budget options. Yes, I have flown out of City airport to Guernsey, taken a cab on both sides, done my business meetings and come home but it is a full day, I know what I am doing and dont care particularly about cost so can grab a cab and pay for fast transport. If you are worried about costs, dont know transit that well, must rely on public transit because you dont want to pay for the cost of a taxi before the tube opens etc it can take longer. Just want them to be prepared. Is that the way they want to spend valuable vacation time?

Odin: there is a WHOLE lotta difference between a business trip and a leisure trip - not even counting the cost difference.
I've done 1-day business trips from N Calif to LA or SD many times (400-500+ miles each way) and from London to several European cities.
Trip to the airport, fly, cab to the office or plant, attend meeting, fly home. No biggie.
But for a sightseeing trip - 1 hour+ to the airport, 60-90 minutes advance check in, 1-2 hour flight, immigration, 30-60 mins into whichever city = 3.5-5.5 hours just getting to that city. Then the same in reverse. That is where my 8-9 hours came from. Could be 7+, could be 11 hours. My 8-9 was just sort of mid between best and worst cases.
OK for a 2 hour meeting, not so hot if one wants several hours to sightsee.

Lille isn't a bad idea, it's on the way to Brussels on the Eurostar so a quick journey from St Pancras.
Also, if you visit Amsterdam, which is a beautiful city, you may want to steer clear of the red light district where there are lots of women with little on, standing in suggestive poses in windows. It may not be what you want your kids to see but don't let it put you off going. Ask at your hotel for directions so you know where to avoid. Other than that, Amsterdam is wonderful for walking, biking and canal boats.
