Day trip from London to Edinburgh

My sister and I are planning a day trip from London to Edinburgh in February. We have a Britrail pass and want to know: 1. How long is the trip? 2. Once we are there, what are some recommended places to visit? 3. Should we come back late in the evening to London or stay one night and go back in the Morning?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!!

The days are pretty short in Feb. If your heart is set on going to Edinburgh you should consider taking the sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. It leaves late at night and you arrive in Edinburgh in the morning. This would give you a full day in the city. Then you could either take an early evening train back to London or you could fly back. Or of course you could stay the night in Edinburgh and head back to London the next day.

Taking the sleeper north will give you a full day in London before going to Euston to catch the train.

It's a 4 1/2 hour train trip from London to Edinburgh each way so it's really not practical to do as a day trip. Besides Edinburgh is such a beautiful city you'd want to spend at least a couple days there anyway. Also janis made a tiny error - trains from London to Edinburgh leave from King's Cross train station, not Euston. And yes there is a platform 9 3/4!

Must see sites in Edinburgh would be Edinburgh Castle, Palace of Holyroodhouse, The Royal Mile, St. Giles Cathedral, Royal Botanic Garden, the Royal Yacht Britannia, Princes Street Gardens, and my grandmother's birthplace.

Sorry Daisy - the regular trains do leave from Kings Cross, but the SLEEPER trains leave from Euston . . . . . .

You could always take the sleeper back too.

You can check schedules on www.gner.co.uk. In Edinburgh, the station is right in the centre of the city.

Thanks for the info, Janis - I forgot about sleeper trains. I've never taken one, wonder what they're like?
