Day trip from Florence to Assisi

I will be staying in Florence for language school for a week with a little extra time on either end. I was thinking of a trip to Assisi and trying to decide if I should stay overnight. The train ride is about 2 and a half hours each way. Would it make more sense to spend the night and come back the next day. What is the most worthwhile to see in this beautiful city??!!

Loc, I'd really recommend staying overnight. There is so much to see in Assisi to begin with; and the feeling at night, when the tour buses have cleared out, is very different; very special.

As well, if you're taking the train, you lose some time getting from the train station in the valley (and the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli) up to Assisi itself. So coming and going is more like 3 hours each way, which leaves you very little time on a day trip.

Yes - you have to a stay a night! Assisi is so lovely and best enjoyed in the late afternoon and evening after the tour buses have left.

There are so many beautiful churches to visit - and of course the Basilica of St Francis, with its wonderful frescoes.

Thanks, we'll plan to stay. How far is it from the train station up to Assisi. Sounds like it might be a ways away?

About 5 km, but there are buses.
Just be careful how you dress. You won't be allowed into churches, esp the Basilica of St Francis, wearing sleeveless top, mini-skirts or shorts. There are usually staff on duty enforcing dress code.
