Day trip from Edinburgh or stay put?

I'll be in Edinburgh for 4 1/2 days next month. Thinking about a day trip to see more of the countryside but don't want the hassle of renting a car and fighting this directionally challenged brain of mine. Is there a place i could visit by train and return in one day? Or would it make more sense to stay in Edinburgh and make sure I see verything there?

There are a series of tour groups who do one day outings into the "Highlands" by minibus (van). Look under Haggis, Timberbush, and Rabbie's.

Or email me and I'll send you a document suggesting some train based day trips.

There are stacks of tour companies including the big names like Evan Evans that offer day trips. I would think that you could easily spare a day to enjoy the delights of places like The Trossachs, St Andrews, Loch Lomond etc.
It you want to get off the beaten track look at using one of the companies that use mini-buses rather than full size coaches.
If you wanted to do it yourself there are a qute a few places you could consider with Stirling being the most obvious one.
I am sure the locals will come up with some more detailed possibilities.
Have a great trip!

Thank y'all so much for the info. The websites look great. However, I don't see an answer for another question: I have hypogyclemia. Don't typically have episodes that would make anyone uncomfortable (or put me in distress) but this vessel of mine does require frequent bathroom breaks( at least once an hour) . Guess i should have said that right off...Anyway, any idea whether I can be accomodated or whether I would drive the guide and the other passengers nutty?
