Day trip from Bellagio to Lugano
We are spending four nights in Bellagio the end of August, early September. My husband suggested a day trip to Lugano and I am trying to figure out the most efficient way to get there and back.We were not planning on having a car, but that could change if there isn't a reasonable option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Topping this for you.
As I recall there is bus service from Menaggio; you would simply have to take the ferry over from Bellagio (10-15 minutes) and walk to the bus stop in the center of town which is only a few minutes away. |
Here's a piece of info from the Menaggio website:
Lugano is situated in canton Ticino in Switzerland and is a world famous holiday resort. To get there you follow the road leading through the Val Menaggio which connects Lake Como with Lake Lugano. In the valley lies the little lake Piano, which used to be connected to Lake Lugano. The little lake and its surrounding area has become a protected natural oasis; there is a nice walk around the lake; see under itineraries hikes and walks. The tour continues along the lake side of Lugano, also called Ceresio. After having passed the border at Oria, you soon arrive at Lugano. Sightseeing at Lugano: Ciani Park, frescos of the church S.Maria degli Angeli, art exhibitions at the Villa Favorita, shopping in the centre. An excursion by funicular to the top of Monte Bré or San Salvatore is highly recommended. Ask for the map of Lugano. Route: Menaggio - Porlezza - Lugano 27 km. By bus: Menaggio - Lugano line C12 N.B. Bring your passport!! I'll try to find schedules for you. |

Unfortunately it is in Italian but this is the best I could come up with.

Thank you so much Intrepid. I am printing the schedule out as I write. Looks like under an hour to get there by bus.

We took the bus between Lugano and Menaggio in Oct. 2003. We were the only non-locals on the bus which made it an interesting journey. Our passports were checked; so as Intrepid mentioned, make sure you take yours.
The bus makes many quick stops, passengers come and go (and seem to know everyone on the bus including the driver), and the scenery runs from interesting to gorgeous. |
