Day trip from Austria
I am thinking of taking a day trip from Vienna to Budapest or Prague. What's the best way to do this? The only site I could find online was www.magicaljourneys.com.
Any reviews on their day trips? Thanks! |
Budapest is 2:50 by train from Vienna each way, and Prague about 4:15. In my opinion, both too far to do day trips.
If you just want to go to some larger cities in Eastern Europe, you can do Bratislava in Slovakia, which is just over an hour by train. Or go to other areas of Austria. |
Hi K,
The Monastery at Melk is worth the trip. ((I)) |
i do not agree with prior poster that a day trip to Budapest is" too far"
Trains run regularly and take 2 1/2 hours. Example leave Vienna 7:15 in Budapest 9:45. Return in the evening at 18.55 or several later trains. You can always eat an evening meal on the train or buy something in Budapest for the trip. This does give you a full day in Budapest if this is what you are looking to for. Austrian Rail website www.oebb.at ( available in english) You can easily find your way to the major sites of the city. Several bus tours also go to Budapest- having never used them , I should not comment. |
I took a daytrip to Budapest years ago from Vienna.
I'd say the trip was well worth it. We took the train out about 0700, arrived in Budapest around 1000. We spent an action-packed 8 hours. We left Budapest around 1800 and returned to Vienna at 2100. I remember very clearly how beautiful at night Budapest and environs appeared through the train compartment window. To save time, we had our meals on the train, both breakfast and dinner. Do it! |
