Day Trip from Amsterdam
 

Are there any small towns worth visiting that are near Amsterdam? Thinking of taking a day trip or an overnight trip from Amsterdam to somewhere... any ideas?

Haarlem. It isn't a small town but it isn't a big city like Amsterdam.

Leiden, Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam... all within an hour's train journey from Amsterdam.

None of those are what I would call a small town, but I guess it depends on OP's definition of a small town.

Close to Amsterdam I would say somewhere like Naarden is worth a visit, maybe together with Muiden and Muiderslot.

Further afield Deventer, Elburg, or even Harlingen (combined with a visit to the planetarium in Franeker maybe) with an over night stay would be worth visiting.

Larger places of interest also include Alkmaar, Den Bosch and Breda.

For really beautiful small town Holland, De Rijp could be a good destination too.
