Day trip between Munich and Frankfurt

Will be taking the train from Munich to Frankfurt on Dec 8. Flight out of Frankfurt on the 9th around 10:30AM, so figure we'll stay in downtown Frankfurt (hotel recommendations appreciated) for the night, see the town at night and take the S-bahn to the airport in the morning.

Instead of wasting 4 straight hours on the train from Munich to Frankfurt, I thought we could stop somewhere on the way to break up the trip. We'll have luggage (and probably gifts as we will be at various Christmas markets the 6 days prior) with us, so somewhere with a luggage check would be great.

I'd stop in Wuerzburg - see the Residenz and have a meal. There are lockers there.

If you'd rather stay in a smaller city with easy walking, try Mainz. It's about 20 minutes from Mainz to FRA on the S-Bahn.

Not sure if your particular train goes through Heidelberg, but that is a wonderful, very old, very charming small city. The university has educated many, many world famous writers and scientists, and the river runs right through the beautiful town. If nothing other than a short cruise on the river and a meal, it would be well worth the stop.
The castle overlooking the city is really special.

Stops on the ICE route that are worthwhile include, depending which route you take, Augsburg and Ulm or Nürnberg and Würzburg.

Visiting Heidelberg would require train changes.

Another vote for Wuerzburg as the Residenz there is very baroque, very glitzy, and very beautiful. The vaulted ceiling painting done in the 1700's is extraordinary as is the "white room". Have never seen anything like it.

Frankfurt is also very walkable, only 15 min. away by train from the airport, or a taxi may run you around 25-30 euro, depending on where you stay. The Christmas market held in the town square is beautiful.

Hotel suggestions:

Nearer to the train station would be Hotel Concorde or the Pure. If you would like more of a 5 star hotel, the Westin would be my first choice. It is right around the corner from the main shopping street, the Zeil, and about a 10 min. walk from the Christmas market.

Looks like there are many train stations in Wurzburg if we decide to go that way. Which would be the best to travel too?
