You could take a train to Montecatini Terme and from the train station a taxi to the thermal baths.

there are free hot springs to swim/wallow in at Saturnia in southern Tuscany near Grossetto. It was quite fun in May but I'm not sure that I'd fancy it in December, plus it's father a long way from florence, but the information might be helpful for someone.

mandalay-- is there a hot springs that you have in mind? i can recommend monsummano and their grotta giusti (they will pick you up and take you to the hotel/grotto from the train station) in the above montecatini terme area.
for santurnia, you wll need a car most likely.
or are you asking whether there is a tour-type bus to take you to one of these from florence? i'm not sure... let us know more.
in the town of montecatini, the thermal water is taken to drink, not really to swim. we have been to many different thermal waters in italy... if you want more recommendations.

yes...sandralist is right... you can take a bath-- or better yet a really good mud treatment... but the water isn't what i call 'thermal' or naturally hot (and no big, relaxing pool)in montecatini. unless we missed something on 3 visits, we found only little private baths offered, where they heat the water... and there is a little indoor physical therapy pool.(at Terme Redi) the 'taking the waters' scene is quite something... pretty like a movie set, but i believe it's only in the mornings..
i do recommend gratta giusti for a nice day and an outdoor soak, and a steam in their caves.
