Day or overnight trip to Rioja from San Sebastian and where?

I'm planning my honeymoon and we're trying to decide if we should stay overnight (or 2) or make just a day trip from San Sebastian area to La Rioja area for wine tasting. We're considering either Laguardia and Haro (or both) and would like a recommendation on which town is most recommended as well.
We'd prefer not to keep packing and unpacking our suitcases which is why we were considering a daytrip but if it warrants an overnight or 2 we'd be up for it.
(p.s. We don't plan to drink and drive - if a day trip is recommended, we'd plan for transportation)
Would love to hear thoughts. Timing is end of July.
Thanks so much!

It's doable, but makes for a long day trip, around 2-1/2 hours each way. It will be very warm in the Rioja the end, making the road trip even longer.

Less then an hour from San Sebastián-Donostia, in Navarra, are some top wineries, Bodegas Arinzano (www.arinzano.com/en/), Pagos de Araiz (www.bodegaspagosdearaiz.com), Bodega Otazu (www.otazu.com), where we were married in '07, Pago de Larrainzar (pagodelarrainzar.com) and Bodegas Irache (www.irache.com). But, like the Rioja, you will only be able to visit three in one day.

Robert,
This sounds like a perfect option for us, thank you!!!!
What a gorgeous place for a wedding, I'm sure it was amazing!

Do the bodegas have food, or do you usually bring something to picnic with at the tastings...or are their restaurants you recommend in the area? Also, if we did this option would you normally recommend an overnight or a daytrip?
Thanks again!

Most bodegas now offer lunch or pintxos at the very least, at least all of the ones we work with, and there are many.

As far as restaurnts go, Navarra is on a par with San Sebastián-Donostia and has a number of ourstanding restaurants, asadors (roasting houses) and pintxos bars, most are in or around Pamplona, but not all.

Some that I can recommend ourside of Pamplona include: El Molino de Urbanize in the tiny village of Urbanize (www.elmolinourdaniz.com), Restaurante Asador Epeleta in Lekumberri (www.asadorepeleta.com), Kuko in Zozaia (www.kukohotel.com), Beti-Jai in Aoiz (www.beti-jai.com) and Restaurante Túbal in Tafalla (www.restaurantetubal.com/es/).

The rest, including Rodero, Europa, Enekorri, La Nuez, Restaurante Baluarte, El Embrujo, La Cocina de Álex Múgica and Alhamba are in the city.
