Day in Strasbourg
 

Hello, we are staying in Baden Baden and planning to visit Strasbourg for a day. We had planned to do a bike tour that sounded perfect - city tour and then goes out a bit to the border and into Kehl, Germany. Unfortunately the tour operator contacted me today and said they "decided to do an event" that day instead and are unable to accommodate us. Urg.

So, we have train tickets for the day in Strasbourg. I looked for more bike tours but everything seems to point back to the same company. We are now thinking of either renting bikes and exploring on our own, or giving up on the bike idea and doing a walking tour. Touring on our own, we tend to miss out on interesting tidbits that a good tour operator can offer. Anyone have any suggestions for one day in Strasbourg? Good tour companies or experience biking? We are there about 10 AM - 8PM.

Most of the main places of interest are in the center, you can easily walk to them, I did.

Sure, you have to get from the train station to the center. I'm not up on their tram routes, I think you take the tram from the train station to Langstross/Grande Rue which isn't far from the cathedral. Check that out. I can't imagine trying to ride a bike around the middle of Strasbourg anyway or why you'd need to do that, it's pretty compact.

the Cathedral, Palais Rohan and Musee des Beaux Arts are right next to each other in the dead center, then you can walk i the Petite France area. There are a couple regional/historical museums also.

I can't imagine doing a bike tour (or needing to). Most things are very near each other so wandering on your own is very easy. But check this out

Get a Michelin Green Guide at library and copy info on Strasbourg (and other guides) and do you own tour - as others have said most things in compact area around cathedral and Little Venice - and there are boat tours from Little Venice - some that go out to striking modern edifices of the E.U. installations - check tourist office web site for guides and usually walking tours you can do on own. The bike tour you described seems like it goes along river or canal to E.U. area and across Rhine Bridge but perhaps little in Strasbourg itself.

Lots of bikes in Strasbourg, none of the riders paying attention to pedestrians! Unless you want to do a ride out of town, forget the bikes and enjoy walking - and take one of the boat rides

I agree. I would never bike in Strasbourg. Everything is very easily seen on foot. If you don't already have a good guidebook, at least stop at the Tourist Office and get a map and some guidance.

Book a walking tour that focuses on food. The markets in Strasbourg are amazing.
