I stayed on Rodos for 5 days in July of 2007, at the Rodos Park Hotel just outside the Amboise Gate of the Old City.

You don't need a guide at all. You really should see the Palace of the Grand Master (exquisite mosaic floors) and the Street of Knights.

You can also see the Archaeological Museum if you have time. Lots of Attica vases here.

Do see the Mandraki Harbour with its windmills. This is where the Colossus of Rhodes supposedly stood.

If you love fabulous jewellery, visit Ilias Lalalounis at the bottom of the Street of Knights. Jackie Onassis wore his pieces. (Ask Rita to show you around. She is the manager.)

There are tons of cafes all over the Old Town. I like Da Vinci, but it is hard to find.

We spent a cruise day in Rhodes in October. Plan was to just walk in the Old Town. We were approached by a driver and decided to take a chance. He took us to a beautiful church right on the harbor, and then drove us through part of the Old city, which is restricted to cars. (Two of our passengers were disabled, and no one stopped him) We toured around the end of the island, then crossed back and drove to Lindos and back. He was terrific, and I believe we only paid 60E per couple, gone about 5/6 hours. His name is Stergos Giannas, speaks exc. English and German. Phone is 22410/32817, Mobile is 6945991754. I'm glad we didn't just stay in the city.

How far is Palace of the Grand Master and Street of Knights from the cruise port?

We took a private tour from Nicholas with Rhodes Private Tours - www.rhodesprivatetours.com We enjoyed our day. Went to Lindos and still had time to look around the city when we got back. Nicholas speaks fluent English.
