Day excursions from Positano/Praiano?

Staying in Praiano (Le Sirene) for 2 nights then Positano (Hotel Royal Prisco) for 2 nights in September. Any recommendations for good water excursions or day trips? Can depart from any town in area. I've heard so much negative about Capri, not sure that would top my list at this point. Thanks.

Hi K,

We took the orabge bus to Positano, the ferry to Salern, the train to Paestum, the train back to Salrno and the SITA bus back to Praiano.

A very interesting and pleasant day.

We also did Positano to Sorrento for a day.

Is there a reason that you are packing up to move 6km?

Variety is the spice of life.

Your posts have been very helpful throughout the planning.
Thank you for your ideas.

Hi KS - Capri, Sorrento, Ischia and Naples are all options by ferry or hydrofoil.

Other possible trips include Ravello, Amalfi, Pompeii, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Paestum, Montepertuso/Nocelle, 'Path of the Gods' (- hike), Solfatara, Caserta, Cassino ...

... to name a few.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Thanks Steve,
A hike or water excursion sound good, although sounds like going anywhere on Amalfi Coast will involve a hike up or down a hill of some sort. Can't wait.

Consider a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast, swimming in coves, and ending with dinner. Check out http://www.gennaroesalvatore.it/
Look at the Amalfi Coast trip.
I suggest a trip to Pompeii, I think you'll love it.

Planning in spurts here. . .I'm thinking of doing the Amalfi Coast water excursion through Genorre e Salvatore. Do I need to book this before I get there (Sept. 22-26) or can I book it a day in advance on site?

Also, don't see many recommendations for Rome-Positano transport that involve the hydrofoil from Naples to Positano. I would think this would be more enjoyable than added another train ride to Sorrento and then the SITA bus. The hydrofoil schedule doesn't jive exactly the way I'd like with the Rome-Naples Trenitalia schedule - maybe that's why. Input? Thanks.

Hi KS - The Naples-Positano hydrofoil service is a high season only service.

Only one or two per day are direct (- 1 hr).
[Others are indirect and take 1.5-2 hrs. :( ]

If you wish to arrive by sea, it's usually more convenient to take a train direct from Rome to Salerno (- from where there is a ferry service to Positano.

Journey time: 70 mins. Fare: € 8.00

There are departures in late Sept. at:
8:40 - 9:40 - 10.40 - - 11:40 - 14:10 - 15:30

Here's the link:
http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr.../costiera2.asp

[If you are travelling from Rome there are direct ES/IC trains to Salerno.
http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html

The dock at Salerno is a 5 mins walk from the railway station ...]

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. A budget alternative is the Rome-Positano bus service (- operator: Marozzi).
Fare: €20 p.p one way (€ 34.50 return)

Dep 07.00 Roma Tiburtina
Arr: 11.30 Positano (- Chiesa Nouva)

For details see:

keepswimming,
Send an email to genaroesalvatore and ask them about booking. We'll be there in October and he said to book a day or two in advance. Also ask them about picking you up in Praiano. If you can get down to the La Praia they can probably pick you up there.

Thanks for both replies. I don't mind a long hydrofoil ride, but the schedule options were certainly limited. The train to Salerno option looks good to me.

Looking forward to Gennaro e Salvatore excursion - and following thread "Is Capri really necessary...?"

Just wanted to mention that some friends recommended to us to "catch the red fish boat" in Positano as another possible excursion. It comes to the dock at I think 10, 11 and 12 and will take you to a private beach with a restuarant and also has return trips at like 1,2&3 (or maybe 2,3&4?). We weren't able to do it, but did see the boat, it has a pole with a red fish on it, you would definitely recognize it. Our friends really enjoyed it. I believe the boat trip is free with the anticipation that you will eat at the restaurant (which they said was good).
