Day car trips from Barcares and stopovers on way to Florence

I have had no luck with responses to these questions on another forum, so am trying here.

Question One: We are staying in Barcares for one week in October and wish to do some day trips by car from there. We love sightseeing and walking. Any suggestions? We have never been to France before.

Before our stay in Barcares we will be spending five days in Paris and six days touring other areas in France, but we have not worked out this itinerary yet!

Question Two: When leaving Barcares we will be travelling along the coast to Italy and have booked a hotel in Florence. We have two nights not booked on the way to Florence. Don't want to stay in the larger resort cities/towns. There are four of us in the group. Any suggestions for stopovers? Maybe one night in France and one in Tuscany area?

Gindi - For stopovers en route I'd suggest Menton and Santa Margherita Ligure - or Vernazza in the Cinque Terre.

Hope others can help with Barcares ...

The beach town of Bacares (if I am thinking of the same town as you) is great for lots of day trips...here's a few we did when we stayed in the area last year -
Coulliere for the day and stay for dinner - a very cute seaside town with lots of great seafood
Sample the Muscat wine produced throughout the region.
Carcassone - kids will love it if you are travelling with kids and really not that far - take the scenic road in and the highway back.
Castle hopping - the Cathar region is full of them.

Thank you both for replies. We are four adults. Castle hopping sounds great - no castles in Australia. Would it be possible to do a one day trip to Pyrenees area?

I have been checking out stopover suggestions and have looked further inland than Santa Margherita Ligure after checking accommodation in the area. Found a lovely looking place Rustico Sara on the Tuscany.net site. Place called Brucciano - in the mountains. Maybe too far for one day's drive from Menton?
