Davos to the Dolomites
 

We're going from Munich to Rome via Davos, Switzerland. Can this be done by rail? Or would you drive? I'd love to go through the Italian Dolomite mountains as well. Are they on the way? What is "the" place to go in the Dolomites if you have one or two days?

I'd suggest you Google a map of Europe and check the location of each destintion just to give yourself a better geographical idea of that part of Europe. Going Munich to Rome via Davos is quite a detour already, particularly by rail, but it can be done. I hope you're giving yourselves some decent time in each place. You can drive too, either way will be spectacular.

Munich to Davos by train will take around 6.5hrs. Davos to Rome is an 8 hour trip, with several changes. Would you consider flying Switzerland to Rome to save time?

The Dolomites are not on the way as such, but can be reached by train from Munich. If you look at the region around Bolzano/Bozen that's pretty much the Dolomites you're referring too, and as you'll see it's not at all a direct route on Munich-Davos-Rome. There is no "the place" to go to in the Dolomites, completely depends on time of year and what you want to do in them-thar-hills.

Why Davos?

Why Davos? My wife's father's family (Accola) is originally from Davos and her mother was born in Augsburg, hence Munich.

I figured if we need to cross the Alps to Italy I would like to end up in the Dolomite region as those mountains look amazing. I don't need to go to the Dolomites, I would like to go the most beautiful, dramatic route but nothing too out of the way. It sounds like the Dolomite region isn't very convenient for this route.

How about this; what is the most scenic route from Switzerland to Northern Italy? By rail? By car?

Go over the Flüela and then comes the hardest decision of the trip:

through Unterengadin (drive through Susch, possibly detour through Guarda, stop in Scuol and possibly detour through Sent) enjoying the beautiful villages and then head to Reschenpass, past the lake and continue on to the Dolomites

or

through Switzerland's National Park (Ofenpass), go through Mustair, stop in the walled village of Glurns and then continue on to the Dolomites

I just came back over the Flüela from Scuol this evening. I'm a huge fan of Unterengadin because of the magical villages but find Ofenpass on a beautiful day just as breathtaking.

From Davos to Italy I would not detour via the Dolomites. Head via Flüela pass (or Albula, which is IMO more beautiful) to the Upper Engadine, either via Bernina Pass or Maloja Pass to Lake Como.

Car or train? Both is doable. From Davos via Albula and Bernina is a classic and very (most) scenic train route. Via Albula and Maloja you take the train first, then change to bus in St. Moritz - to Chiavenna, where you change to train again.

The hassle with trains is to get from Munich to Davos - driving is much easier for that part, and also more scenic (via Garmisch, Fernpass, Landeck, Lower Engadine/Scuol and Flüela pass).

We visited the Dolomite area a couple of years ago and you are going to love it....we stayed in Castelrotto at the Hotel Cavellino d'Oro and had a great experience. I even have a little trip report on Trip Advisor along with photos in case you wanna look...

We had a car so we drove all around. We had been in Lake Como then drove across - after the Dolomites we went to Bolzano and went to the museum there to see the Ice man, then on to Bologna, etc......
