Danube Cycleway
 

My friend and I are planning about 10 days on the Danube Cycleway, at the German end (travelling from Munich), in July. We plan to hire our bikes. We are interested in your thoughts as to which part would be more interesting, in terms of mountain scenery, character villages and towns? Also, I know it will be peak time, but does anyone have suggestions for accommodation along the way, at the clean but lower end of the cost scale? Can we wing it, as in book as we go? I think we'd look at about 50km/day - average. Thanks.

July is high season, so winging it is risky. At the very least book the first night and be prepared for the odd taxi ride to an available hotel. Are you going to carry enough technology to use booking.com on the road? I like the bit to the West of Ulm and the bit to the East of Vienna up to Budapest, though I could leave out Bratislava.

Carrying technology, thanks for the thought, we could and probably should do that. We are favouring the Passau-Vienna section now, so that narrows it down. Any hints on that section, also reliable bike hire at Passau, would be welcome!

Well we are talking Germans, so, as a generalisation, they do what they say they are going to do. But no I have no idea of their reliability. My usual test is do they have a good web site? If so they are making enough money to run a business.

Just a thought on the Vienna section, watch out for flooding and the dreadful accent that the locals use.

This journal on crazyguy lists a Vienna bike rental shop. I know you are starting in Munich, but you might email them and see if they know a good sh0p in Munich.
