Danna and other SW Scotland experts!

Hi! I'm trying to decide between staying in Castle Douglas or Dumfries or Dalbeattie. The places we most want to visit are:
Threave, dundrennan, caerlaverock, sweetheart abbey and drumlanrig...then heading to stay in Kelso and do the Borders after our 2 night stay in D&G. Where would be our best base?

Ani... between the three I recommend Castle Douglas, it's a lovely town with great food. I've stayed in Dumfries but wouldn't recommend it above Castle Douglas. I don't know anything about Dalbeattie, so I can't comment on that. I'm so glad you are looking at visiting this fine spot of the world.

Thanks Danna that narrows it down for sure. Could you recommend a place in CD or did you not stay at a B&B?

Ani,
We just visted there, and found wonderful cheese and wine at a shop on the south side of High Street. I look at local sites and know that they have a food festival. We stayed in Kirkcudbright. My advice is to stay there, find a fun pub and be prepared to chat. Have a grand time! I can't wait to hear about your trip!

Dana,

Do you think Kirkcudbright is worth a visit, and can you recommend a place there. I have heard it's very artsy. If not interested in art, would we still enjoy it?

Thanks, Maggie
