Dali - Spain

If we can only go to one major Dali site, would you suggest the Dali Theater-Museum in Figueres or Salvador Dali House in Port Lligat?

Lifeman Feb 25th, 2011 04:43 AM

The museum in Figueres is not to be missed. If your interest is his work, then the museum is the one to go for. If you want to see where he "lived", then the house.

They aren't that far apart however, so you could do both, unless you are really pushed for time.

Thanks, Lifeman. We are planning 6 days in Barcelona (with a possible day trip to Monserrat) and then, a 2 day, 1 night trip to CB area, including Girona. Any suggestions welcomed! We need to be at the airport in Barcelona the second night for an early morning flight out the next day. I saw this--"If you want a list of places to see send me an e-mail and I'll return my Barcelona doc to you". May we get this, too?

I would skip Monserrat and go to both Figueres and Port Lligat if possible. Also Girona is wonderful and well worth your time. We visited all these areas in January. It's easy to drive if you can rent a car for your trip. You must reserve ahead for Port Lligat.

Last night we went to the Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The building is beautiful, and paintings more refined than those in Spain. We prefer the atmosphere of the museums and home in Spain.

I can't compare visits to Figueres and Port Lligat, as we visited only Figueres. The museum was a wonderful experience - how often do you get to see a museum not only dedicated to one artist, but designed by him, as well?

We also visited Girona, which was beautiful and interesting.

The Barcelona document that you mentioned, is that something that you saw here on Fodors? You might be thinking of the various guides to places in Spain by maribel. If you google her name and Spain, you'll see all of her guides. We used her guide to Barcelona (as well as others) when planning our trip several years ago to Barcelona (and Figueres and Girona).

From Girona you can visit Gala's (Dali's wife) castle in Pubol

Dali museum in Figueres is fab, building itself is cool, well worth a visit - we visited several years back from Glasgow. My daughter was younger at the time & after seeing so much of his work she said "It was all good, but where is Christ of St John On the cross?"!! Think that trip was wasted on her........

Virginiafish, I don't remember if I have responded to any of your other posts, but if you click on my name, you can read my trip report to Barcelona, Costa Brava, & Girona from this past October. We didn't have time to vist the Dali museum in Figueres, but we did visit his home in Port Lligat & loved it!!! It is amazing & so unique!!! Also, please stop in Cadaques if you have the time. You won't be disappointed.

Be aware that if you choose to visit Dali's home in Port Lligat, you must book in advance. They only let about 12 people in per showing. And leave yourself plenty of time, as the road to the house is not well marked, and is not that easy to find. (At least it wasn't for me!)

It is well worth visiting, and I agree with Kwoo that Cadaques is great - I'd recommend getting an early reservation for the house, and spending the rest of the day in the beautiful town.

your responses are very helpful. we are working on a 3 day/2night trip from Barcelona. Any itinerary suggestions appreciated. Yes, Kwoo, we have found your trip report valuable!
