Cycling in Vienna
 

We will be in Vienna for four days mid August. On an Austrian website I found some themed cycling routes that sound interesting. Unfortunately none of them state the length of the routes and the degree of difficulty.
I have raised the question through the contact form on the website, but no reply so far.
Maybe some of the Fodorites know about these themed routes?

Myriam, my German is close to useless but I can advise as follows

Viena is on the bank of the Danube and is basically flat and so there is little risk of hills. I down loaded the ring road one for instance and as I expected it mimics the ring road tram route and while you could compare it with google to get actual distances it does not take long on the tram so I guess (guess) it's less than 3km long. Perfectly pleasant ride except in the rain. Also watch out for cobbles and tram tracks as these can be slippy. Any sensible adult would compare it with going to the local shops.

Since that estimate took me 30 seconds I think you can download and compare the others :-)

Thanks for pointing me to google maps. I never think of that.
Oh well, since those routes are so short it may be not worth renting a bike.

Myriam, if it's a longer ride you're interested in, consider riding to Bratislava (nice and flat), then taking the return Twin City Liner to Vienna. The ride is roughly 60km one-way. http://www.twincityliner.com

Thanks for the suggestion, but riding to Bratislava is not what I had in mind. I'm not that good of a biker.
I thought there were some interesting cycling routes in and around Vienna.

The path along the Danube in either direction is worth doing and you can also cross the river on tiny ferries at the odd point, lovely to be in the country so close to a capital city. Once out in the country you get local inns and hence local food, fantastic.
