Cycling in Shetland

Hello All!

My husband and I are going to be travelling to Lerwick, Shetland for one day and decided we wanted to rent bikes and cycles along the North Sea Cycle Route. Any suggestions of where to go/which path to take? We have never been big cyclers, but would like to be - and are relatively healthy and active. A lot of the routes I can find from Lerwick involve taking a ferry, and we would prefer to stay on the mainland, rather than have to rely on ferry transportation.

Any and all tips would be much appreciated - thanks in advance!

WHEN? Time of year makes a huge difference.

But assuming mid summer -- Maybe a loop Lerwick to Holmsgarth to Scalloway and back to Lerwick? About 12 miles total. (Disclaimer -- I've been to Shetland but not cycled there)

Hi Janisj,

Thanks for your suggestion! We will be cycling later this month.

Are you staying overnight or is this just a day trip off a cruise ship or something?

Because if you are staying over you can cycle for hours - or at any hour since it will be daylight from about 0330 til about 11PM
