Cycling Durnstein/Krems - Vienna, Austria

Hi there,

Ther e are tons of posts on this topic but I am not able to piece together a clear answer:

Can i take a train from Vienna to Melk, see the Melk Abbey, and then take a boat ride along the Danube river from the Melk dock to Durnstein, have lunch here and rent a cycle to Krems and back to Durnstein and then....how do I get back to Vienna?

OR

Do I train from Vienna to Melk, see abbey, take boat to Krems, have lunch, and rent a cycle to Durnstein and back to Krems, return cycle and train back to Vienna?

If anyone has done some cycling in these areas please help!

Thanks

You can take the boat trip from Melk to Durnstein.
In Durnstein, you will find several bike rack rentals.

One is immediately next to the boat dock. Just to the right side.
Another is found in a parking lot where the Danube cruise ships dock.
A third by the bus stop.

Info regarding bike rentals found here
www.nextbike.at

You have no need to return the bike to Durnstein. This rental system allows drop off at any bike rack point.
In Krems for example, one is found at the train station.
very convenient.
Trains from Krems to Vienna about 1 per hour
look here for schedule.
Normally you find double decked passenger cars on this route. No trouble to find a seat.

The way Durnstein- Krems isn about 10 kilometers - 6 miles .
A portion through wine gardens , the villages Unterloiben and Oberloiben. There you find numerous wineries, heurigers.

Some information on this area

Regarding auto rental. Both Prague and Vienna are not auto friendly. Expensive parking.

With frequent and cheap train service, the car much less convenient.

Due to theft troubles in Prague, some rental firms will not rent certain model of auto on this routing.
You could find expensive drop off fees too.
