Customs in Italy

When arriving in Rome from the US with a connecting flight to Palermo will we have to go through customs in Rome before boarding our connecting flight to Rome? or will we go through customs in Palermo. We have a short connection time (1hr) so I'm afraid that we may miss our connection. Does anyone know the procedure?
Thanks

You do not go through Customs, you just go through the door where it says nothing to declare. However, you do have to go through Immigration, an entirely different thing, where they will check your passport, and you'll probably have to go through Security again.

So our bags will be in Palermo when we arrive, we do not need to get them in Rome, go through customs and then re-check to Palermo?

When one enters the US you need to get your bags and go through customs as soon as you enter the US, even if making a connecting flight. That's why I'm confused.
Thanks!

As long as you're on one ticket for both legs, they will check your bags through to Palermo and you do not pick them up in Rome.
