Customs - flight US to Rome with stopover

We are flying from Detroit to Rome with a stopover of a little over an hour in Amsterdam. I believe we are changing planes.

Do we go through customs in Amsterdam or in Rome?

Thanks!

customs in Rome, but you may not even know your are going through customs as you walk out the door from baggage claim.

You, your luggage (checked & hand luggage) will be security checked at AMS

Why is that Alan? Won't the bags be checked all the way from Detroit to Rome - she will never see her checked bags in AMS.

Pressed enter too quickly

Even if your luggage is checked through it still can be security checked without you having to collect it
