CURRENCY IN CROATIA
 

Hi there

Looking to understand what the best currency is to use in Croatia from a travellers cheque perspective. Can I bring Canadian travellers cheques - are they received there or do I need to bring Sterling travellers cheques or Euros?

Croatia uses kuna. I entered by bus from Italy and had some Euro with me but didn't use them. There were plenty of ATMs around to get kuna right away.

I used American Traveller Checks with me last year and had no problems. I plan to do the same thing again this year.

There is no reason to take any of the things you mention to Croatia. Just like in nearly any other country in the world, your best bet is to take your ATM card and withdraw cash from your checking account in the local currency. Croatia is a surprisingly modern country. You will find ATMs everywhere. For example our first day there we stopped in the rather small town of Piran near the beach and realized we needed local money to park. Yep, there was an ATM at a bank right there. We laughed as we then counted at least 12 ATMs along a beach strip about half a mile long!

Duh, I'm really not that stupid, just still jet-lagged, I guess. As soon as I posted I realized you were talking about Croatia and I was talking about Slovenia.
But my same answer applies to Croatia, where we saw and used ATMs everywhere also!!!

Just an FYI on exchanging kuna back to your country's currency...I kept our remaining Croatian kuna and Slovenian tolars just thinking I would make one stop at the Frankfurt airport and exchange both for euros. The exchange place at Frankfurt did not accept either forms of currency.

I took them to my bank in the US and they could only take the Slovenian tolars, not the Croatian currency. I did not have that much, so it was not a big deal to me, but just wanted to pass this info on if it helps anyone in the future.

Thanks for all your info...I'll make sure I spend ALL my kunas (shouldn't be hard!) while in the country.

Also, just in case you exchange too much and didn't spent it all, you can exchange your Kuna's to Euro's/Dollars in any bank.

Bridget, A good tip for using the remaining local money is to pay part of your hotel bill in cash and the rest by credit card. Be sure to save enough "cash" for the taxi to the airport and a cup of coffee when you get there!
