nona - I just don't see how it is offensive. Perhaps a bit naive, but offensive? I can assure you that the Danes aren't that easily offended. They may think it funny or simply tell you no, but offended because you don't have any DKK? I don't see it happening.

Look, people, the Danes recognize just how small their country is. They don't expect you to speak Danish and I doubt they are going to get too upset that an American asks if they can pay in USD.

Again - you SHOULD get DKK, rather than trying to rely on USD, but this is for your benefit, not the benefit of the Danes.

I'd like to see anyone manage a 5 day stay in any European country without any of the local currency...unless you intend to put everything on credit/debit cards.

a little off topic, but an entertaining read nonetheless about those Loud Americans:

Sorry if anyone thought that was nasty. It wasn't.

Assuming that shops and businesses in another country (except one living off tourism from a richer neighbor) will accept US $ in payment is, IMHO, arrogant and rude - as well as displaying a serious lack of perspective on how the world works.

Thank you all for your input. It has been interesting. I am going on a cruise but wanted to see more of Denmark than a few hours would allow. I do plan to use a credit card most of the time and yes I will get an ATM card to get cash as needed.
Thank you.

nytraveler- based on your comments above, if someone's only travel experience outside of the US is to Canada and Mexico, both of which accept USD in the major metro areas, then that is the lens through which they are asking the question. It can't be rude if they are being sincere in asking, perhaps a little naive, but one overcomes naivety through experience. Perhaps you were born all knowing and savvy in the ways of the world - the majority of travelers were not. Your response was not of a helpful tone. It was condescending and did nothing to contribute to the conversation. Dare I say, arrogant. Gourmet, Patty and others addressed the question in a professional and educational manner. Kudos to them!

SweetLife, we are on the same page. I made my post about Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean because we do get posters once in a while who have never traveled outside of North America. Such travelers are often under the impression the US$ can be used anywhere outside the US. It might sound strange to those of us who are frequent international travelers, but I do understand why some people are under the misconception that our currency is welcome everywhere.

Only with Americans you can have so much fun. :D Thank god, unlike others, I'm not arrogant. You should praise me for that.

We are using clam shells over here in Europe for centuries now, only lately we switched to green (and other) colored cotton lumps. I always preferred the shells just because their superior nutritional value. (There's always somthing to eat inside when you harvest the shell) But those lumps taste odd and my mouth is always green after a meal.

Anyway, our cotton lumps taste much better than yours! We don't want yours! Comprende?

(OK, now that Juede got her answers we can carry on)

We're going to bring Levi's jeans in for bartering. How much should we request in Kronas not to be cheated?
