Currency conversion

What is the current conversion rate from US dollars to Euro's? Does it change from country to country? I'm interested in travelling to Italy.

$1 = €1.54

One of the advantages of a single currency like the Euro is that it does not change in those countries which have the Euro.

The rate changes daily, depending on the market. There are numerous websites that will show the current exchange rate - one of the easiest is to enter into google "1 euro in usd"

See www.xe.com for currency conversion rates, all major currencies.

Actual conversion rates will vary depending upon how you make the transaction.

ATM withdrawl is often least expensive, with credit card cash advance or currency exchange bureau commissions higher. Make sure you have correct number of digits in PIN number.

Much depends on the credit card company, as rates and transaction fees vary greatly. Check with your bank, and notify them of your foreign travel plans.

There are two conversion rates a traveller need understand. The central or market rate is the actual market valuation of the Euro (or any other currency). The other is the buy rate. The price the traveller has to pay to acquire Euros (or any other currency). It will be higher than the market rate. I estimate that today, March 22, a Euro will cost a traveller $1.60 each. Again this price will vary up and down depending on the source of the transaction. If you sell your unused Euros you may only get $1.50 for each of them. The Euro is suppose to have the same value in all of the countries where it is the prime currency.

Hi D,

If you buy your Euro from an ATM, it will be the bank rate ($1.54) + 1% for MC/Visa + whatever your bank stiffs you for "conversion fees".

The Euros buying power might change slightly from country to country. You'll get a bit more for your Euro in Germany than in Italy.

The value of the euro versus the dollar is the same everywhere the euro is used - ON THAT particular day.

But naturally prices for things vary - just as they do in the US - more $ for a meal or hotel in large cities and tourist areas, less $ in small towns.
