currency change in Heathrow

We'll be arriving in Heathrow early morning and being met by a car service whose driver I need to pay in BP's-- no credit card, no traveler's checks.
Question: will it be better/easier for me to use my ATM card and get pounds in that manner,or to go to a currency exchange of some sort and change my AmEx traveler's checks?
Thanks in advance.

Our experience has been that ATM's are now the accepted and most convenient way of getting cash (and give better exchange rates than traveler's checks.) And they are abundant in airports.

(We haven't carried traveler's checks since I can't remember and we have traveled in Europe, Australia, Scandinavia, South and Central America and Hawaii and Alaska.)

Super fast and much cheaper to use the (plentiful) ATMs. There's really no need whatsoever to bother with traveler's checks.

". . . . change my AmEx traveler's checks?"

Have you already bought Travelers Checks?. If not -- don't do it. TCs are a total nightmare. No one wants to cash them -- even many banks won't touch them.

I don't remember specific location, but I easily got GBP from an ATM machine after landing in Heathrow, stumbling off an overnight flight (so it couldn't have been complicated is my point!)

I totally agree with using an ATM but I do NOT necessarily agree as to how "plentiful" they are at Heathrow.

Yes, EVERYONE above me, I am sure there are "plenty" of them but they can sometimes be hard to find so, Poss, be on the lookout for them.

Thanks for all the replies. I keep thinking that with hundreds of people landing in Heathrow around that same time in the morning, the ATM's will be jam-packed. We'll just queue along with the rest.

I do need to take traveler's checks, by the way. The guaranateed "special" rate for our hotel in Nice needs to be paid either in U.S. dollars or traveler's checks.

In terminal four, there are several of them right outside arrivals - straight ahead as you walk out, in the same area as the currency exchange bureaus.

I think flights from U.S. arrive in Terminal 1, no?
(I'm much concerned abt our return trip-- from Nice thru Heathrow. I believe we'll need to get from Terminal 4 to 1. And we don't have much time!)

How much time do you have for that transfer?

The terminal depends on from which city and on which airline you are flying. BA from many US cities uses Term. 4.

I'm not sure there's anyplace in Heathrow that will exchange Trav Checks any longer. It's getting to the point that very few places (even banks) want them - and you have to find an AmEx office,.

Definitely pull money from one of the ATMs.

If all goes as scheduled, we arrive Heathrow from Nice at 1435. Depart for Phila at 1615. We're not spring chickens anymore, so mad dashes are out of the running. I am definitely worried, but not a whole lot I can do about it.

Whatever terminal I landed in, all the ATMs on the main floor were our of cash. But the one near the Underground station had no line and had cash.

If you are getting into terminal 4:
http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co...lities-t4.html

"Abbey Link ATM at the main Travelex Bureau de Change and a Barclays machines near the small Travelex beside Costa Coffee. They accept most international and domestic cards."

In a pinch (all the ATMs are out of cash) get the driver to take you to an ATM. They're usually very helpful.

If you have a problem getting cash try the ATMs in the DEPARTURE areas
