Currency - Budapest and Prague
 

When visiting Budapest and Prague, should we anticipate using only HUF in Budapest and only CZK in Prague? Are Euros used?

Many places, but by no means all, will accept Euros -- but usually at a rate that is disadvantageous to the customer.

I use credit cards for larger transactions, and get cash from an ATM for smaller sending.

Thanks for your reply. Our preference is to use HUF and CZK. I did, however, see certain things within Budapest and Prague quoted in Euros. Therefore, I asked the question.

Needless to say, Euro is NOT our preference. And CC for larger transactions is certainly the way we always go when we're able to do so.

definitely stick with HUF & CZK. often the price in euros, if listed, is at a pretty bad exchange rate.

That said, it can be worth asking, in a few of the markets in Budapest (namely at the Central Market Hall) if they take dollars or euros, and what the cost is - if you know the exchange rate this will give you a good idea if you would get a better or worse deal by paying in something other than forints. In march we actually encountered a seller at an embroidery stall who was selling table runners & handkercheifs for $10 US when the price in forints was equivalent to more than $15.

In both of these cities be sure to count your change in whatever currency you are using.

The exchange rate in each is confusing and short changing foreigners seems to be favorite pastime.

I was shortchanged in Budapest after becoming confused and rushing because I was "holding things up".
