I always drink gatorade when I don't feel good. I hope it replaces the electrolites but it does settle my stomach.

I try (emphasis on "try") to follow every glass of wine with a glass of water. And I don't set the alarm clock early, either.

The Australian hangover breakfast, Berocca, can of red bull, 2 large glasses of water and then as much greasy food as you can. Preferably deep fried potato scallops, dimsims and a Chiko roll ! You don't have to worry about liver disease, the heart attack will get you first ! ;)

So it seems that "hair of the dog", a gallon of Gatorade, followed by copious amounts of greasy food will cure all! :D
Sort of makes one want to go drink too much, LOL

Try Alka Seltzer "Cold" medicine before you go to bed - supposed to work better than the regular tablets.

hangovers are not caused by drinking!

it's when you STOP.

seriously, just eat a lot of food, and space your drinking out. if you are sitting at a 3-4 hour dinner, and have a bottle of wine, you'll be fine.

When I was quite a bit younger, we always hosted a big new years eve party and everyone crashed where they landed at the end of the night. I learned to start a big pot of home made chili, (very spicy) the day before. That and loads of grapefruit juice and a beer chaser was the cure of choice for many years.
Boy, what we could get away with when we were young! That now would probably send my GI tract into horrific protestations!

As Dean Martin so eloquently stated:
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink, because when they wake up in the morning that's the best they'll feel all day."

Drink water and take some form of aspirin/advil/ibuprofen/whatever I've forgotten so that someone can't point out that I've forgotten.

I'd also suggest that the real problems start when the glass of red wine turns into the calvados/the sambuca/the whiskey. So if you can avoid the inclination to "up the ante" you won't regret it the next day.

suze Sep 3rd, 2004 06:45 AM

As others have mentioned the problem comes not when you drink but when you stop! So unless you have REALLY hurt yourself (in which case just stay in bed and pray) ease back into the day with a croissant, bit of meat or cheese, tea/coffee, and onto a small glass or two of cold white wine.

My DH says that a little romantic action in the bed, before ever assuming a vertical position, is the best cure because of the endorphin release. Maybe it's just a male ploy, but it certainly takes your mind off your pain:)

Stop at the nearest fast food joint and immediately eat a large fry-may be an awfully american thing to do but it made many Sundays in college survivable!

Scarlet,
When you put it that way, it almosts sounds like college.

I get awful headaches the "morning after"...I've heard you can't take tylenol but is it ok to take advil or motrin the night before to ward off the headache? Is aspirin better?

bashful - where are you going? I assume this is in relation to a trip - perhaps Italy?

If so, just as an anecdotal story, when I was Italy, I drank a lot of wine - wine before dinner, with dinner, after dinner - and was never hung over. Because their wine doesn't have the sulfites in it that wine in the US has, you might not have the same reaction to over-imbibing there as you would here.

Just an observation! But, keep hydrated and take aspirin before you go to bed, that helps!

I have a weak stomach + always have a headache the day after drinking alcohol (hmm, maybe I shouldn't drink?!). The best cure for the headace is Excedrin - something about the caffeine in it works wonders. For the stomach, drop Alka Seltzer into Gatorade instead of water. It's not easy to drink if you're queasy, but trust me - it works.

There are also some people who cannot drink red wine because their body does not make a certain enzyme. I knew someone who used to take a pill before he would drink red wine so that it would not make him ill the next day.

Have a tall frothy Guinness for breakfast. If one glass doesn't do the trick take a refill.

jnn1964 Sep 8th, 2004 06:47 AM

Ani - I wouldn't know! I drink like a fish!
