cruise, very, very last minute

Wondering, if cruise lines have empty cabins at time of sailing do they offer at discounted prices or is it even possible to cruise at the "very very last minute."
If so what is the process of getting on the "standby list?"

It used to be possible but there have been some Homeland Security "rules" inposed which require cruise lines to supply passenger lists some hours in advance.

I would ordinarily say 'call the cruise line' but who knows what kind of information you may or may not get from them?

Perhaps you could call an agency which specializes in cruises for the info.

Generally, no.

It is possible some times to get less expensive cabins a couple of weeks before sailings, but it largely depends on booking details. Generally cruise lines will upgrade paid customers into next-higher categories if there is unsold inventory, so it's conceivable, but quite rare, for the "trickle down" effect to occur - upgrade from view to balcony, inside to view, opening an inside cabin.

However pre-payment requirements coupled with yield management practices similar to the airlines have resulted in very few last-minute bargains.

And as Dukey says, security practices have basically ended any kind of "walk-up" business.
