Cruise Trips
Going on Celebrity in October and would like to visit Orvieto from Civitavecchia when there for the day is this possible to do it ourselves. Our do we need to book trips and can any one reccomend a good private guide. Were four seniors but quite fit.

You can easily enough do it by train - from port to Rome and from there to Orvieto. But, depending on how long you're in port you might not have much time there.
I'm sure you could hire a private guide with car - but the cost wouldn't be modest. |
No, Orvieto is not practical as a day trip from Civitavecchia by train. There are no direct train routes and you would have to go to Rome first (1 hour from Civitavecchia) to catch the train to Orvieto. The shortest connection one way would take 2 1/2 hours.

OH YES IT IS!!!! We hired a driver from "romeinlimo", Claudio to be exact and I want to tell you Orvieto is to die for.. (we shared the ride with three or four couples)..We went through Tuscany, the vineyards, stopped at Positano and Multipulciano.. but Orvieto.. oh my..We were there exactly 10/16/2000, a Sunday.. and there was a religious festival outside with music and dancing, a market on the side of the church.. Our driver arranged it for our to have a fabulous lunch there.. then a flea market further down... It was a cool and crisp day and I can remember standing in the plaza wanting to jump up and down for the sheer joy and beauty of those moments.. It was our first time in Italy.. and we are going back to Rome in two months..Claudio said it was as far to Rome as it was to Orvieto..It's hard for me to tell you how gorgeous the area was, the colorful shops, the flowrers from the balconies, the ladies shopping at the market.. Just know... I remember it like it was yesteray. (We were on the Celebrity Century if I remember right)

As kybourbon said, Orvieto is not practical as a day trip from Civitavecchia BY TRAIN. Orvieto is a lovely place to visit, and from Civitavecchia the only practical way to visit is with a private driver as ParrotMom describes, or with a one-day car rental.

Thank you for your answers will talk to our party and try and price the cost of a private driver. Really want to see Orvieto. We are on a small cruise only seven days so want to see things we havent seen before. We go to Nice first then to Genoa never been here. Then Florence would like to do Luca and Pisa and then Rome and last Naples. So any other hints, or tips they are gratefully received.

ON our last trip in November we did with a driver/guide.. Cinque Terre... incredible.., five Italian villages hanging onto cliffs among olive groves on one side and the ocean on the other..Also, plan on a private tour of Rome..when I tossed a coin in the Trevi Fountian a friend reminded me that I was coming back.. this year..lol.. it didn't help me as I was so overwhelmed by the size and beauty of this fountain .. it hit me emotionally so that i ended up sobbing.. I have no idea why.. The Colusseum, well, I can just see Spartacus in there.. and the ruins in Rome, everywhere you looked...I fell in love with Rome..the wild traffic, the ruins and just everywhere you looked there was history hitting and the past in your face. In October we would like to see the ruins at night and stop to see the Spanish Steps.. and celebrate a special anniversary drinking a bottle of wine in front of the Trevi.. As seniors ourselves I highly and I mean highly recommend a private driver and PLEASE go to Orvieto. As a senior we have memories and have been places that others envy us now....Do it.. WHILE you still are able.. If you need the name of our Rome driver. please write
