Cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia
We plan to take a cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia next summer. What other cities do you recommend to include in the cruise and why? Thanks
|
Tallinn, Helsinki, Stockholm--it depends on what you want to see, the pricing from the cruise line, how long you have, etc.
|
Be sure to book a cruise that spends at least two days in St. Petersburg. Most of the good ones do, some allot even three days. Another question to ask is whether the ship will sail up the Neva River into the center of the city, or whether you will be at the ugly commercial docks an unscenic half an hour's drive away from town. It makes a big difference.

Tallin was one of my favorite cities when we went on our cruise. The others mentioned above were great too!!

Sophie, I didn't know that any of the international ships dock at the port on the Neva (there isn't a customs/immigration terminal there).

Hello,<BR>I went on a crusie that went to Norway, Finland, Denmark, St Petersburg, Estonia... Well the crise departed from England. It was a two week cruise. I had a lot of fun and it was beautiful. I recomend that you either go with a group of people or if you go just two people to pick a cruise that has great entertainment. If You just want to relax, then I recomend the other places mantioned before

If you want off-beat places, visit Tallinn (Estonia) and Visby (Island of Gotby, Sweden). THey, and Riga, have wonderful old Hanseatic towns. (The Hansa League was a German trading league that dominated the Baltic in the 13th - 15th centuries). For larger towns, visit Stockholm and HElsinki. If I had to choose between the two, take Stockholm. THis town is by rights called the Venice of the North, and the fact that it had a huge empire in the 17th century shows. Helsinki, in contrast, is somewhat drab. Considerably less of historic buildings, etc., than Stockholm, Tallinn, etc. I have travelled many times to Estonia via Helsinki. Once I travelled to Estonia via Stockholm (by overnight ship), I decided there was no comparison and opted for Stockholm on future visits. Hope this helps.
