Concrete is still being poured.

They could do as Ryanair does, and call Ravenna "Venice".

No, you took me too literally. I was referring to the Ryanair strategy whereby, for example, Bergamo is called Milan.

I don't know if anyone will be able to watch but they cover a lot of ground in an hour.

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/saving-venice/

There is no one solution. So they depend on engineers, geologists and many others to come up with several ideas for saving the city.

Videos of the alta acqua are surprising, it's like a stream with waters coarsing through the streets and alleyways. You can't walk through it nor ride a boat through it. So they set up a series of elevated planks for people to walk on.

I saw some flooding one summer but it was only on certain streets and it was mostly large puddles, not water covering every square inch and running through. The building I was staying in set up a low gate to keep the water out but that was only about a foot high. True alta acqua will be much more than that.

They showed a lot of the MOSE in operation. It can block really big surge tides but they can't keep the gates up because Venice doesn't have a normal sewage processing system, they spew out the sewage to the waters and depend on constant tides entering the lagoon and circulating the waters out.

I.be been in Venice for a few days and I have noticed the city is less crowded. It is still crowded, but not like before.

There has been high water every day, at Rialto and at my boat stop (San Marcuola.) Scrb11, people DO walk through it, locals with rain boots and tourists with plastic garbage bags or even worse, bare feet.

Piazza San Marco was partly flooded midday yesterday and people were splashing around in the water. People were sitting at tables at Cafe Quadri with their bare feet in six inches of water drinking spritzes. I walked through the middle where it was dry and then got out of there.

If you watch the show and the videos, water is like waist-deep and rushing fast.

In the 20th century, there were like a half dozen times when it got that bad.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, there have been like 19 such events.

No matter how high the water, it likely contains some remnants of sewage.

No Mose, Rialtogirl? sounds as if the water was high enough to trigger it, though San Marco is one of the lowest lying of the main parts of Venice of course.

In 6 weeks' time on 11/11/2019 it will be the anniversary of the last "acqua grande", which caused so much damage to so much of Venice but actually forced the authorities to start using il Mose - the flood defences which are situated at 4 parts of the lagoon to stop the waters flooding into Venice. It would be most concerning if it's not being able to be used as we enter the worst season for "acqua alta'.

annhig I don’t think what is going on now is Mose inducing.. it is just high tide and it goes back down.

it was November 12, 2019 when that awful acqua Alta came and it was a surprise.. that storm was all over Italy, not just Venice. It took EVERYONE by surprise. The problem is it was so sudden that I think Mose could not have been prepared for it.

They talked about other measures, like growing the marsh islands to absorb more water, maybe even mangroves.

Also pumping water into the aquifers to raise the city as much as 25 centimeters.

The bigger problem is the erosion caused by giant ships. Getting rid of the erosion caused by the giant wakes created by these ships would help the marshes.

The geography is tough. When there are strong enough winds, the water gets blown up the Adriatic, and Venice is at the pit where the greater water volume pushed by winds have nowhere to go but on land.

rialtogirl, I was in Venice on the morning of 11/11/19 and flew out before the worse hit, but it was obvious that the situation was going to be bad as during that week the water had already reached seriously high levels in places and vaporetti were being seriously impeded in moving around. It also happened that in the Italian class I was taking we watched a TV prog about Venice which included a long section about the Mose and how the authorities had taken so long to construct it that parts of it had already rusted away. So it was a huge surprise and relief that following that acqua grande they decided to activate it, and have indeed done so on quite a few occasions since, which I know because I get text messages telling me. However I have just checked and at the moment it is only being activated when the water reaches 110cm by which time parts of San Marco are indeed likely to be flooded.

annhig thanks for the first hand account. I have a friend in Venice that told me they were not ready for the severity of that particular acqua alta. I was in Sicily at that time and with no notice the same storm hit. I went to the bathroom and came out to a flood in the bedroom.. totally pazzo.

I truly hope that the Mose does the job!

Rialtogirl, it wasn't just the height of the water caused by the acqua acqua itself, which they can forecast pretty well now, but the waves brought by the storm which together caused so much of the damage and made it much harder to take quick action against it. People were trapped in their apartments for days and when they finally emerged it was to find wooden cafes and the news kiosks destroyed, shops and houses knee deep in water and sludge, great piles of ruined furniture sitting in the middle of campi, boats sunk or adrift, the whole landscape of Venice changed. And for a while the acqua alta kept coming so that every day they had the same task of sweeping it all out again. As i said my flight out was the morning before it hit but I had already seen enough to realise a little of how dreadful it must have been. Like you say, we must hope that the Mose does its job to prevent such destruction in the future,
