Cruise question - Naples

Cruise question - Naples
My wife and are are going on a trip of a lifetime next June - 12 day Mediterranean/ Greek cruise starting Rome and ending in Venice on Emerald Princess.
We have notice shore excursions a little pricey - any advice on doing shore excursions on your own ?
Probably our biggest dilemma is in Naples - with only one day do you go to Isle of Capri, try to see Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius or see the Amalfi Coast ?
Any advice would be appreciated !!

I'd say it depends on what you are doing on your other excursions.
If you are seeing a lot of beautiful coastline, Capri may be more of the same (don't have a clue though as I've not been to Greece yet! don't know how different it is)
If you are seeing lots of ancient ruins...you may not be up to Pompeii...I, persoanlly...if given only one day...would probably start off in Sorrento...stroll around...take the SITA bus to Postiano and then Amalfi (and eat a great meal in one of them) and then head back and just enjoy a relaxing day...the views from the bus are terriffic and you'll feel like you saw a good bit of the coast! You can always change your mind and take the ferry out to Capri if the mood takes you.

If this is the trip of a lifetime, why don't you add three days to the beginning. Fly Eurofly nonstop into Naples and spend one night there. See the archeological museum, the views of Vesuvius, and visit Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Take the train to Rome the next day and have a one-day city tour of the city. Then begin your cruise...
When you back to Naples on your cruise, you can visit the Amalfi Coast. Capri, unfortunately, is incredibly crowded.
You can do it all!

Our family did a similar cruise last year on Celebrity Millennium, although DW and I had had a land tour including Amalfi Coast and Capri in 2005. Daughter and sister weren't on that one though, so we arranged a private tour for our one day in Naples - did Pompeii and Amalfi Coast with a driver, who also arranged a guide for Pompeii (drivers can't be tour guides there).
I don't think you should try to include Capri - but do go back so you can spend a night or two there in the future. It's too crowded, and just not enough time to do it all.

Princess did offer a tour that did half a day in Pompeii and half a day in Capri. In an earlier post it was suggested that this was too much to do in one day, but I pointed out that if you only have one day in port and cannot decide which of the two to do (the dilemma I had), then it can be done. You can get a taste of both in a single day, but I believe that you have to take a tour to do this efficiently. You don't have the time to look for, or wait, for transportation. You also cannot take a chance on getting lost. As I mentioned in that post, this day was one of the highlights of my trip.
Friends of mine took the cruise just before mine (Rome to Venice, including Greece and Turkey) on Princess. Their highlight was the tour of the Amalfi coast.
Pompeii will give you history. Capri and the Amalfi coast will give you scenery. One consideration that was pointed out to me was the advisability of seeing Pompeii while you can. No telling when the volcano will blow again!

One other thing, Murray. The Princess tours are quite expensive. You can do some of the smaller ports and towns on your own, but I think that your Naples day is one that is worth spending the money to take the tours that are offered.
Princess, by the way, does a great job of its tours. They contract with different tour companies in each country. This was our second cruise with Princess, and we found that even though the tours were expensive, they were well done and efficient. When lunch was included, it was always good. No skimping.

Why not stay in Naples?
Visit the Archaeological Museum, the Capella Sansevero, Castel dell'ovo and the waterfront, see the city and Vesuvius from Castel St. Elmo, take a walk through Spaccanapoli.
Eat good pizza and gelato. Have a Limoncello or three.
Enjoy your visit.
