Cruise Port to Center of Rome

Does anyone know how to get to the center of Rome from the port where cruise ships come in?

Hello kit, another Fodorite just posted on another thread here regarding a car service she has used four times and has been quite happy with. They do take people from Civitavecchia to Rome and back to Civitavecchia so you can review their website and see if this would be suitable for you.

The train will cost about 10 euro per person and take about an hour. A limo/shuttle will be about 100e for 2 people and take about the same time.

For trains

You can actually walk from the ENTRANCE of the port area to the train station in Civitavecchia in about ten minutes (totally flat terrain and on sidewalks).

Trains stop at San Pietro (within easy walking distance of St. Peters) before making the final stop at Rome Termini.

As has been mentioned, the frequent local services take about an hour each way; no reservations required. You can buy tickets from the machines or at the window in the Civitavecchia station.

Thanks for the replies. I just found out that we dock on May 1st which is a holiday and I was wondering if their public transportation is on a holiday schedule which would make it more differcult getting back to the ship. I have been debating on using the ships excursions or doing my own. I am going to emial the airport shuttle and see what they say. Does anyone know about this holiday?

What is your time frame and what do you want to see in Rome? A train might be the better option since road traffic might be heavier with Italians traveling.

Hi K,

>we dock on May 1st which is a holiday and I was wondering if their public transportation is on a holiday schedule...

Everything will be on a holiday schedule.

See http://tinyurl.com/2n4qfd for a list of major sights that will be closed.

Our ship docks from 7 am to 7 pm. I thought I would take one of the ships excursions which drops you off in the middle of Rome and picks you up later. Then I thought we would take the hop on hop off bus so we can see whatever sites are open and not worry about transportation. What do you think?
