What sort of advice? I took possibly the same cruise out of Rome last year on the Celebrity Reflection. Happy to help but your question is quite broad.

louiss - this is much too wide for us to answer properly.

where is the cruise going? [no point in us sending you back to places you've just been to!]

have you been to europe before, what do you like doing, do you want to travel by car or train, etc. etc.

You need to list the ports so we know what cities you are visiting

Get yourself a copy of ick Steve's cruise ship guide to Med. ports - it will be hugely helpful. Aslo there is a great internet resource, Cruise Critic. You can make connections thru a roll call with others on the same cruise - you may want to book some tours together that will be cheaper and better than the ones offered by the ship. Also on Cruise Critic is a section on "ports" - more good info on the ports on your itinerary. You may get some info here if you post the ports but IMO Cruise Critic is a much better source of information for those doing these wonderful cities in a short period of time.

whoops - that is RICK Steve's - I hope this did not open the door to deragatory comments about Rick! I really need to start previewing my posts!

suec--a lot of people on this board will say you were right the first time.

ok, so the situation is the exact opposite of what i thought; you want to know what you can do ashore during the cruise.

what suec said.

In Istanbul we took the ship's tour which included the Asia side, Haiga Sophia, Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar. Decent amount of time for each plus lots of "drive-bys". The major unrest was just starting so there were lots of traffic jams as well.

The ship's tours are expensive but I don't regret taking the tour in Istanbul. When we return, not via ship, I would do everything on my own. The major disappointment of the tour we chose was not seeing the Topkapi Palace.

Doing research on cruise critic and possibly forming a group is very good advice and will save money.

Ports that are easy to do on your own are, imo, Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, Athens and Naples (for the city). From Naples you might want to see the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii which would require some organizing. From the ship, you can walk into Naples. If you want to spend time in Rome, add this to the front or back end of the cruise. If you haven't been before, try to spend at least three days.
