Crossing the Gironde

Are there any ferries?

ira Mar 25th, 2005 10:35 AM

Where are you crossing?

elle Mar 25th, 2005 10:42 AM

We'll be coming from Rochefort, I think, with an ultimate destination of St. Estephe.

Looking at a map (not a detailed map, just one in a guide book), it looks like the only way to cross is to take the A10 almost into Bordeaux. But I feel like I've heard about a ferry. . . maybe from Royan?

Thanks, ira.

Yes, there's one from Verdon to Royan, one between Royan and Pointe du Grave, one between Blaye and Lamarque, and one between Bordeaux and Blaye, maybe others.

Hi elle,

www.mappy.com says that there is a ferry between Royan and Verdon.

They will give you a route.

Here's info on at least two of them:

Elle -- We spent two weeks in rented house near Rochefort a few years ago. We absolutely loved the area and there is a great deal to see and do. Hope you have a good amount of time.

Unfortunately, we have almost no time at all in Rochefort. We're stopping there exclusively so that I can see some people involved with the construction of the Hermione, which is related to a work project of mine.

We do have four days in the Medoc, though. But we'll have to plan another trip to fully appreciate Rochefort, I suspect.

Hi Elle,
We visited the Hermione in its early stages. Do you know how close they are to completion? And whether they will be able to sail to Boston? When were there, a docent said they couldn't get insurance without an engine, and of course an engine would be contrary to the purpose of the project.

Hi, vedette.

The latest that I heard was that the frigate will not be finished until 2008 or 2009. Apparently they need to raise another 4 million euros to finish the ship.
