Croatian road map query

A friend and I are going to Slovenia / Croatia in July. We're picking up a rental in Ljubljana & dropping it in Split 10 days later. We have an itinerary & reservations, but we will need a map. I have a Magellan GPS which I've used in the US/Canada, and I'm considering ordering downloads, so I'd appreciate comment from anyone who has used Magellan maps in Croatia/Slovenia.
However, I'm a very visual learner, and I'd like to have a good road map, for an overview, and in case major road construction makes the GPS useless (that happened to me in Detroit--NOT a happy memory).
I found a Slovenia road map by ordering from the Slovenia tourist board online, but the Croatian site isn't nearly as navigable. Amazon.ca has 2 possibilities: an Insight map from 2008 and a Rough Guide map from 2009.
I used a Rough Guide to Vienna, and found the book great, but its maps horrible: white roads on pale cream background, awful for quick glances. I don't think I've ever used an Insight map. Any helpful info available?
Oh, and to save helpful people from wasting time: I'm in rural Canada, so Amazon.com or a local bookstore are not options, and I've already searched this on the forum.

I don't understand why Amazon.com is not an option - I live in Toronto and order from it on occasion?

Anyway - Chapters has a Michelin map of the entire region

We spent two weeks in Croatia in March - I was going to download the map to my GPS but in the end we bought a map at a gas station (6E) and it was all we needed. It's very easy to navigate and the roads are well marked.

One other suggestion - you might want to call Open Air bookstore in Toronto - they have an excellent selection of international road maps

Wow--that seems like black magic. When I did a search for "Croatia road map" in Chapters online, nothing came up. I followed your link, and the map looks perfect. Just for curiosity, I tried the search again in the box at the top of the page--and it still produced no results! So what the heck do they categorize it as, and what did you search to find it?

I first searched for Croatia Road Map (as you did) and got no results, so I then searched Croatia Map (bad search function on Chapters part, though).

There are 30 results for maps of Slovenia and Croatia on the above link.

I know it's amazon.co.uk, but there's no reason why you can't order from it, everything listed is there to be sold, and amazon just charge extra for international postage so there's a set charge. You'll be charged in your own currency as well.

I list books on amazon.co.uk, and often sell to buyers in the US, Canada, Australia, indeed all over the world. It's not a problem for them or me.

To go back to the maps, I have driven quite a bit in Croatia and Bosnia & HErzegovina, and use a Freytag & Berndt map which also covers Slovenia. The scale is 1:600.000 - frankly I'd prefer a larger scale, but this one has seen me through the mountains and along some back roads since 2007. Warning - some of those little white roads are real white-knuckle drives! Remember there is a reason why the main red and yellow roads seem to go a long way round!

I see Freytag & Berndt now do a 1:275.000 scale map which would be better.

I'm a Canadian in Croatia right now and have a rental car that we got in Zadar and are dropping off in Dubrovnik. This may sounds elementary, but honestly the car rental agency will give you a map of the country and they're actually pretty good (we wanted GPS too but it wasn't available, so we've been relying on the map and been doing just fine.)
We took a bus from Trieste through Slovenia to Zadar to get here, and there seem to be 2 main choices of roads through Croatia:
There is the coastal road, which is beautiful because it runs parallel to the sea but is windy and takes longer;
or you can use the autobahn which takes less time but is more inland and costs some money (from Zadar up through Plitvice and down to Split cost about $10 cad). But you will probably be given a map and it should do you just fine, and if you're feeling uneasy I'm sure you can either buy one in Ljubljana or right over the border in Croatia. Good luck!
