Croatia w/o Reservations
Hi - I want to go to Croatia in October on my own, driving for the most part, to a number of national parks. How common is it to find a room for a night or two near the parks w/o reservations in advance, in private homes?? When I went to Poland, I stayed at a house for a few days, in the mountains, for about $16 USD per night. It was a very, very nice room!! I am hoping to do the same in Croatia, but rather for the entire trip. Is it similar in Croatia? Are there signs for rooms for rent in all tourist areas and you just knock on the door the same night you are looking for a room?
Thanks very much for your advice!! |
Yes, it is the same. There are many rooms (sobe) for rent in all of the tourist areas.

Hi Linda
I too am going to Croatia on my own in October (13-20), and driving myself around. You don't mention any dates, and it seems you may be visiting Plitvice and other parks. But if your plans coincide with mine, it could be nice to meet up somewhere? My provisional itinerary is to fly into Split on 13th, night in Trogir, then drive up to Mostar where I am meeting another Fodorite, Barb, then the next day we may either drive down to Dubrovnik or continue through Bosnia to Sarajevo for the next night. I then have 3 nights booked in Dubrovnik, before one night somewhere on the coast on my way back to Split. Have a great trip anyway! |
Thanks SloJan2, I'm glad to hear it!!
Julia - How funny! I was just checking airfares for the 11th to the 20th. Where are you flying into? From? Have you booked everything already? Your car too? It looks like $60 per day is the going rate for an automatic. Did you book everything on your own or did you go through a group? I went to Norway and Iceland once through this company that put together a nice itinerary for me, but that was mostly necessary to get all of my public transport and sidetrips pre-booked. It was very convenient, but can get more costly, I think, by using their contracted for hotels. And, yes, Plitvice is on my list. |
Oops, sorry, just re-read your post and see that you are flying into Split.

Linda...
Yes, I'm flying into and out of Split. I realise I cannot possibly see and do all I want in Croatia in 7 days, and the at that time of year the car ferry timetables don't fit very well into my plans, so I decided to stay on the mainland, and keep south. Istria, Plitvice and the north of the country will have to wait for another trip. I booked my car rental with www.economycarrentals.com as they offered the best rates and allowed me to take the car on ferries and into Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro for only an extra 50 euros or so for the cross-border card. I have booked my first night in Trogir, my second in Mostar where I am meeting Barb, the 3rd is open, then I have 3 nights in an apartment in Dubrovnik reserved, and my final night is again open, depending where I am on the way back to Split. I am thinking maybe Korcula, but need to investigate ferries at that time of year. You could email me at [email protected] if you would like to talk further or meet up. |
If you are driving, you'll see many many of the small "sobe" signs along the road. Yes, you can just knock on the door.
October is considered the very last month of tourist season, so some places may not be expecting guests. |
